What does Alitalia’s business problems mean for travelers?

GD asked:

I need to fly to Albania, and virtually all flights to Albania from my closest airport in the Northeast U.S. have a connection in Italy. Which means Alitalia pretty much has a monopoly on my flights choices. Any ideas what might happen to these flights in light of their dire business situation? I don’t want to buy a ticket and be left stranded.
I appreciate the other suggestions, however I should have specified that I would like to leave out of Newark. JFK has consideribly more options (ie Malev, Austrian, etc.) but Newark is more limited. I have found a fare through Continental that is reasonable for when I need to go.
Regardless, it will still be interesting to see what will happen with Alitalia considering I need to travel to Italy and Albania on a regular basis.
