SUSAN N asked:

My husband and I have started a process serving business in Central Florida. After becoming licensed,we’ve visited over 200 attorney’s offices in the last three weeks with fliers, cards, etc. I’ve followed up with an individual email to each office manager. So far, we’ve had two phone calls. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the phone rings? BTW, I have a website up and running and our pricing in commensurate with the area.

Most attorneys already have process server relationships. You need to have something extra about your service that will cause the attorneys want to switch to you. Must be legal and ethical. Market research (ask them) is what you need to do. General Custer

I would dedicate several hours a day to visiting with attorneys, paying particular attention to their legal assistants (secretaries). A lot of times, the assistant makes the decision or recommends someone. I would ask the assistant how she thinks you can get some work. If you get five or ten minutes with the secretary, you may have done your best marketing.

Target by checking the web and yellow pages for high litigation specialties. Personal injury lawyers are easy to find. Insurance defense lawyers don’t advertise so much, but they have a lot of process to serve. Divorce lawyers also have to serve a lot.

Dress neatly and professionally and emphasize that you will be prompt, persistent but professional. Point out that there is no “flash” and there is minimal excitement to the way you work.

It is hard to become the process server of choice for attorneys who have a satisfactory regular choice. However, good marketing will probably pay off.

    Again, secretaries are key.

    Good luck. NZ curious spectator
