I am 22 years old and would like to open a Pawn shop in 3-4 years. I was thinking that maybe I should go to business school and save up all my start up money during that time. What are the benefits of going to school for business, and do you have any tips for starting a pawn shop in Minnesota?

Unless you’re planning to run someone else’s business, going to business school is really a waste of money. There are tons of books that are excellent for learning to start and run your own business. A good one is “Small Time Operator” by Bernard Kamaroff. If you WANT to go to school, a bookkeeping course would be a good idea. They offer them at most technical schools and junior colleges.

In the meantime, you could try getting a job at a pawn shop to learn the ropes–just don’t let on that you may become their future competition! Also, check into your state laws for small businesses. Look it up online, or check out the government section of you local phonebook. p2of9
