New York College Student asked:

Just wondering because I am estimating the cost of a business me and my partner are planning on running. I live in the new york city and surrounding areas. We are also planning on running a second location in Los Angeles. Both businesses require automobiles.
Im aware I cant add averages on a tax return, however for car purchasing purposes im just wondering if there is any type of statistics available for people that report mileages on their business vehicles.

  1. v b says:

You would need actual milage, not an average. You can’t report “averages” on a tax return.

Besides, if you only work in one location per day, it’s called commuting and you can’t deduct it. If you work in two locations, the mileage between point A and point B is the business mileage. Getting to A and home from B is still commuting. v b

There would be a number of factors, not the least of which would be the nature of the business, that would go in determining the average mileage per vehicle. You would be as good as anyone in determining that as you know the nature of the business you plan to start. At least I would hope that you do. Mathew

Any average would be useless to you, since it depends on YOUR business and how many business miles you have. Some people would have 100,000, others would have 100. Judy
